Improving early-career teacher retention in Missouri

This partnership works closely with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (MO DESE) and select school districts across Missouri to enhance mentoring and other supports for early-career teachers so that they are more likely to continue teaching in their district. In the early stages of the partnership, REL staff are helping partners gain a stronger understanding of promising mentoring practices through a statewide study to identify mentoring practices that are most strongly related to the retention of new teachers. Within partner districts, REL staff will coach district staff on designing and conducting analyses of their survey data to learn about how specific needs for mentoring and improved working conditions differ across groups of teachers (such as groups defined by the teacher’s race/ethnicity, route into teaching, and teaching assignment). This early work will inform subsequent coaching to help partner districts strengthen and better align supports to the needs of their teachers.

This technical support project is intended to help University City improve teacher retention by building a stronger understanding of strengths and potential gaps in their supports for new teachers.

This study will will leverage data from MO DESE’s spring 2023 first-year teacher surveys to understand the features of mentoring experienced by Missouri first-year teachers and which mentoring features are related to the retention of early-career teachers.
